Mass Spectrometry

The Mass Spectrometry Unit consists of three Agilent gas chromatograph-mass spectrometers (GC/MS); two Agilent liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometers (LC/MS); and three ABSciex liquid chromatograph-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometers (LC/MS/MS). The mass spectrometers are used for quantification and identification of vitamins, amino acids, nucleic acids, lipids, fatty acids, flavonoids, retinoids, carotenoids, peptides, and proteins from food and human body tissues. Data generated by these instruments are used in human nutrition and exercise studies to measure vitamin metabolism and bioavailability, DNA methylation and apolipoprotein kinetics.
